The Beginning

So  I am new to this but wanted to put our family's experience with epilepsy in to words and thought this was a great way.

So this is my son Sam who is now 13 years of age with his Dad at Uluru (Ayers Rock). On the 05 June 2013 our life certainly changed when Sam had his first seizure - Tonic Clonic (although at the time we did not now this). He was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital Emergency (great people) who were unsure at the time what was going on so organised and EEG for the following week on Friday.

I have never been so scared in my life. It was kind of like things were in slow motion and my hyper vigilance and mothering instinct certainly kicked in big time.

On the 13 June 2013 Sam had his second Tonic Clonic Seizure which myself and my husband witnessed. (very scary). Once again taken by Ambulance to hospital but this time admitted. EEG carried out on the Friday as planned and abnormal activity (quite significant) identified and Sodium Valproate started immediately.

By this time I was at a heightened anxiety level had begun to investigate Epilepsy ( Thanks Epilepsy Australia). Sam however, was very matter of fact got on with life and was a little annoyed that for the few weeks onwards (about 6) would not be able to ride bike or just go off to his friends without supervision.

So Sam is very open about his epilepsy he has told all his friends and shown them how to place him in the recovery position should he have a seizure not to put anything in his mouth as swallowing your tongue is a bit hard :) . Parents of his friends and our friends have been extremely supportive in ensuring Sam's life goes on as normal. The support we have received from his school Marrara Christian College and all the teachers has been nothing but amazing.

However, there was still more to come...
